Ausflug nach Maryland / trip to Maryland

Schlussendlich haben wir uns auf einen ganz anderen Ort geeinigt - auch in Maryland. Zuerst gings nach Piney Point und dann weiter nach Point Lookout.

Was ich von unserem Ausflug lernte:

1. Es gibt auch hier in den USA Radfahrwege. Nachdem es dort sehr flach war, waer es sicherlich schoen gewesen, mit dem Rad dort entlangzufahren.
2. Wir sahen ein paar amische Waegen. Ich habe nicht gewusst, dass die auch im suedlichen Maryland sind.
3. Im Potomac bei Piney Point liegt ein versunkenes Deutsches U-Boot. Im Leuchtturm-Museum gab es auch eine kleine Ausstellung ueber die Geschichte des U-1105 "Schwarzer Panther". Es wurde nach Kriegsende von den Englaendern an die Ameriker uebergeben, die damit Versuche durchfuehrten. Das Besondere daran: es war mit einer schwarzen Gummischicht ueberzogen, um "unsichtbar" zu sein - daher auch der Spitzname.
4. Nicht alle Leuchttuerme sind auch "Tuerme" - fuer Point Lookout waere der englische Begriff "Leuchthaus" zuzutreffender. Man hat es nicht von innen besichtigen koennen und daher hat es mir auch nicht so sehr gefallen. Point Lookout war hauptsaechlich von Anglern besucht, die rund um den Spitz aufgestellt waren, um ihr Abendessen zu fangen. Piney Point war viel entspannender und schoener.
5. Geh nicht in unbekannte Gewaesser!! - Es gab auch einen Strandbereich in Point Lookout und wir fanden ein Stueck, wo wir die einzigen Badenden waren. Es hat alles wunderschoen ausgesehen - also bin ich rein um es auszutesten. Am Strand zuvor sahen wir ein paar Krabben - daher liess ich meine Sandalen an (die haben einen Riemen, also dachte ich mir, die kann ich eh nicht verlieren). Es dauerte auch nicht lange und etwas streifte meine Beine, das sich wie Algen anfuehlte. Kurz danach brannte alles fuerchterlich - vom unteren Ruecken bis zu den Zehen!! Das erste Mal, dass mir soetwas passiert ist. Das hat man nun davon, wenn man in einem Binnenstaat aufwaechst. Ich bin anscheindend dadurch in Panik geraten und habe so gestrampelt, dass ich einen Schuh verloren habe (was natuerlich Sek vorhergesehen hat). Mir war das zu dem Zeitpunkt so egal, ob ich jetzt einen Schuh hab oder nicht. Ich wollte nichts als raus aus dem Wasser. Also blieb Sek nichts anderes uebrig, als reinzugehen und meinen Schuh zu retten. Als er damit wieder rauskam, sagte er mir, er haette einige kleine Quallen gesehen. Ich haette mir nie gedacht, dass eine Qualle soo schmerzhaft sein kann. Zumindest spuere ich heute nichts mehr davon. Natuerlich sah ich dann beim Weggehen eine Tafel mit einer Warnung ueber Quallen.

We finally agreed on going to a different place - also in Maryland. First we stopped in Piney Point and then continued to Point Lookout.

What I learned from our trip:

1. There are bikepaths available here in the US. Since it was very flat there, it would have been nice to ride a bike.
2. We saw a couple amish buggies. I didn't know that they are also in southern Maryland.
3. In the Potomac near Piney Point there is a sunk German submarine. In the lighthousemuseum they have a small exhibition about the history of the U-1105 "Black Panther". It was handed over to the US after the war, who used it for testing. The special part about it was a black rubber skin, which made it "invisible" - hence the nickname.
4. Not all lighthouses are towers. (The German word for lighthouse is "lighttower" - which would make more sense most times). The lighthouse at Point Lookout was actually a house, with the light on top. Point Lookout didn't look that nice and we couldn't go inside. Not only the lighthouse, but the general area was not very appealing. There were many people there trying catch their dinner. Piney Point was much more relaxing.
5. Don't go into unknown waters!! - There was also a beach area there and we found a spot where we were the only visitors. It looked beautiful - so I went in the water first. On the beach we saw a couple crabs. Therefore I kept my sandals on (they have straps, so I though I won't loose them). It didn't take long and I felt something along my legs. I thought it was algae. Shortly afterwards everything started burning horribly - from my lower back to my toes. It was the first time that I felt anything like that - see what happens when you grow up in a landlocked country. It seems I panicked, so I kicked so hard that one of my shoes fell off (which Sek predicted of course). At this point the shoe was the last thing on my mind. I just wanted to get out of that water as quickly as possible. So Steve had to go in and rescue my shoe. When he got back out he told me that he saw a few small jellyfishes. I never thought that a jellyfish could be that painful. At least I don't feel anything anymore today. When we left the area, I saw following sign:
   

Eintrittspreise - Entrance fees

Wir sind momentan am Ueberlegen, einen Ausflug am Wochenende zu machen. Unsere lokale Zeitung brachte kuerzlich einen Beitrag ueber den Thomas Point Leuchtturm in Maryland. Das waere doch etwas Nettes. Nachdem wir in der Naehe von Washington D.C. wohnen, sind wir etwas verwoehnt, wenn es um Eintrittspreise geht. Die meisten Museen und anderes hier sind gratis oder kosten nicht allzuviel. Zumindest wenn man es mit den oesterreichischen Preisen vergleicht, wo man pro Museum locker 10 Euro/Person zahlen kann. Nur gut, dass man sich heutzutage so leicht Informationen holen kann: dieses Vergneugen wuerde pro Person 70 Dollar kosten! Es ist zwar eine Bootsfahrt dabei, aber um den Preis ist das auch nicht so was Besonderes. Die Zeitung erwaehnte noch, dass die Besucher hauptsaechlich Paare sind. Kein Wunder, denn Familien mit Kindern werden sich das ja wohl nicht leisten koennen. Unsere zweite Wahl ist der Assateague Leuchtturm, der auch ganz schoen aussieht.

We are currently thinking of taking a trip this weekend. Our local paper had recently an article about the Thomaspoint Lighthouse in Maryland. That would be something nice. Living in the D.C. area we got a little spoiled when it comes to entrance fees. Most museums and other stuff are free or very cheap. At least compared to the Austrian prices, where you can easily expect to pay 10 Euro/person to get into a major museum. Just good, that it's so easy getting information nowadays. This lighthouse-fun would be $70/person!! It includes a boadtrip, but for that price it's not that special anymore. The paper mentioned that most visitors are couples. No wonder, families with kids probably can't afford it. Our second choice therefore is the Assateague Lighthouse, which seems also very nice.
