Bettwaesche - bed-linens

Adrian berichtete kuerzlich ueber Leintuecher - in einem anderem Zusammenhang jedoch. Das brachte mich auf die Idee, Unterschiede bei der Bettwaesche aufzuzeigen, zumindest was einem, finde ich, als erstes auffaellt.

In Oesterreich hat man eben ein Leintuch auf der Matratze - soweit noch keine Unterschiede. Dann bekommen die Polster und die Decken Ueberzuege, die mit Knoepfen zu schliessen sind. In einem Doppelbett befinden sich meist zwei Decken oder Tuchenten, die gerade gross genug fuer eine Person sind. Man braucht sich daher nicht darum streiten. Das Material mit dem die Decken nun gefuellt sind, kann verschieden sein. Mehr darueber kann man hier erfahren. Sehr oft aber handelt es sich dabei um eine Federfuellung.
Nachdem die Betten hier eine Untermatratze haben, gibt man oft ein Tuch darauf, das seitlich runterhaengt und diese eben verdeckt. Dann gibts wie in Oesterreich ein Leintuch. Darueber gibt es nochmals ein leinartiges Tuch, mit dem man sich aber zudeckt. Gleich darueber folgt dann die Decke, die hier nicht in einem Ueberzug steckt - daher eben das Tuch darunter. Tuchentueberzuege gibt es hier aber auch. Nur sind sie nicht sehr haeufig. Normalerweise gibt es eine Decke, die Groesse passend aufs Bett abgestimmt.

Adrian wrote about canvas not too long ago. That gave me the idea to write about differences when it comes to bed-linenes - at least the stuff you notice right away.
In Austria you put like here a sheet on top of the mattress - sofar no differences. Then the pillows and the blankets have duvet covers which have buttons to close (also the pillowcases). In a double-bed there are most times two blankets or feather beds, just big enough to cover one person. You don't need to fight for the blanket therefore. The material to fill the blankets can be varying, most of them have some kind of a feather filling.
Since the beds in the US have a boxspring, most times you put a sheet, the dust ruffle, on there which hangs down to the floor to cover the boxspring. Then, like in Austria, you cover the mattress with a sheet. Then there is another sheet here, which you use to cover yourself though. On top of that one is the blanket or the quilt, however, it is not very common to put it in a duvet cover. Usually there is only one big blanket, which covers the whole bed and is meant to be shared by both people. The size depends on the size of the bed.

Moebel - Furniture

Es gibt viele kleine Unterschiede zwischen Deutschen und Amerikanischen Moebeln, die doch auffaellig sind, weil man daran nicht gewohnt ist. Andrea beschrieb wie ihere neue liebe Katze lernte, die Tueren zu oeffnen. Sie erklaerte dann auch den Unterschied zwischen deutschen und amerikanischen Tueren. Das ist allerdings nicht der einzige Unterschied der mir aufgefallen ist.

• Fenster: Deutsche Fenster sind ja wie Tueren, die man nach innen oeffnet. Amerikanische Fenster sind wirklich so wie man immer im Fernsehen sieht - man schieb sie nach oben (und hofft, dass sie nicht wieder runterplumpsen.
• Steckdosen und Lichtschalter
• Betten: es gibt in Deutschland nicht so verschiedene Groessen, nur Einzel-oder Doppelbetten. Man verwendet auch keine Untermatratze, sondern eher einen Lattenrost. Dadurch sind die Betten auch um einiges niedriger.
• Kleiderschrank: man muss in Deutschland Schraenke kaufen. In den USA sind sie in den ZImmern schon integriert.

There are many little differences in German and US furniture - differences which you will notice because it's different than what you are used to. Andrea mentioned how her new adorable cat learned to open doors. She explained the difference between German and US doors. That's not the only little difference when it comes to basic furniture. A few other little things when it comes to furniture and such are:

• windows - German windows are like doors, they have a handle and they open up by pulling them towards you. When I first came over here, my thought about the windows here was "That's really like in the movies - where you push the windows up and sometimes they just don't stay up"
• power outlets and light switch
• beds - German beds are usually much lower. They don't have certain sizes like Twin, Queen, King. It's only single or double. They also don't have a box spring like in the US and are therfore much lower. They use a slat base (?from dictionary).
• closets - in Germany (and Austria) you have to buy your closets. They are not integreted in the house/apartment like in the US.
