In my parents' garden there were lots of those potato beetles this year. My dad said that those were dropped by the Americans in the war to destroy the crops. That's the first time that I ever heard any of that and I didn't really want to believe it. I asked Sek, if he knew something about it, but he had never heard of this before either. I finally found some time to read up on it: those rumors have been around as propganda for more than 60 years - first used by the Nazis, later by the Sovjets. The beetles have been in Europe since the 19th century though. I find it interesting, that disinformation like this still exists so many years later in the general public.

Desinformation / Disinformation

Groessere Zeckengefahr - Dangerous Ticks
Nowadays it's quite easy to stay in contact with the homeland. Browsing through NOEN, one of my favorite online papers, I saw a poster about vaccinations for ticks. It has been quite a few years now since I got my last shot. Problem is, that ticks in the US are not that dangerous. First, like everything here, they are much bigger and therefore easier to spot and to remove. Second, you can "only" get lime disease from them. In Europe in addition to that there is a much greater risk. Ticks there carry a virus which can transmit encephalitis. Sofar I found no information that it's possible to get the vaccinations also in the US. I know it's not necessary here, but what about tourists? Sprays and long pants are just not sufficient enough. Ticks should be really bad this year, since there was such a mild winter. Each time we visited a castle and had to walk through wooded areas, Sek had a couple ticks crawling on his socks. We have special tick tweezers now, which work really well. However, the risk to get sick is still high.
