Where I grew up every Saturday at noon the siren of the firefighters goes off for a few seconds - just a test to make sure it's working right. Nothing like that here. The only sirens you can hear here are from the fire engines.

We had the "noon whistle" (as we called it) in my small towa in Iowa growing up! I don't actually know if they still do it, since my dad now lives in the country so I don't hear it when I'm visiting home. It was the same siren that was used when there was a fire, alerting the town's volunteer firemen to come to the station, find out where the fire is, and go. If it went off just once, it was noon. If it went off multiple times, it was either a fire, or a tornado warning (went off until danger passed). I guess you'd know the difference just by the weather :)
We had the noon whistle too,and now that I am in Tulsa, we have tornado siren and other siren warnings the first Wednesday (or is it Thursday?) of the month during non-tornado season.
Heidelbergerin: It's almost the same in my hometown. 3x means alerting the firefighters; just once on Saturday noon.
Maria: A tornado siren would be very useful also for our area - every year it seems there are more warnings with some touch-downs here.
My suburban town in NJ also tests the fire horn 1x a week (Sat. noon). I don't remeber having it in "my" little town in Austria and we definitely don't have it in Germany where I live - just lots of church bells, and I am ok with that, too.
I just wanted to say thank you for writing this blog in both German and English. It's really helping me to improve my German!
Madison, WI. First Wednesday of Every month at noon the tornado sirens would be tested. I've seen this elsewhere as well.
But fire engines, that I haven't seen in the U.S.
annonamoose: I guess you lived in a larger Austrian town. I only now it from little villages.
Jennie: Thanks for your visit! So, you are trilingual? Great!
Gardner: With fire engines I meant the trucks for the firefighters. Shouldn't have used the dictonary;)
