Although customer service is not always the best either in the US, compared to Austria it does have lots of advantages. Most times you can really bring everything back and get your money back too (not just a store credit). Exemptions are electronics like CDs, DVDs, etc. if they were already opened. When returning stuff you only have to be prepared and have your receipt with you. Important: stay polite and don't be short-tempered. They usually don't give you a hard time when you come wiith comments that you've already spent hundreds of $ in that store and you will go to the competition in future. Sometimes that's exactly what you have to do though. Sek wanted to buy a 3DVD-set which just came out this week and was therefore on sale. The store we usually go to only had the 2DVD version on the shelves. We asked a manager if they had any more somewhere else. He was so arrogant that he wanted to convince us that there were three in there - without reading what the package actually says. It was clear that he didn't want to do his work and deal with customers or look for it. So we went to the competition who had the 3DVD-set, but it was a little bit more expensive. However, they had price matching and withouth any arguing we could get it for the price the first store offered. All we needed was the flyer to show him the price. I don't believe that would have been possible in Austria.

Maybe not in Austria, but in Germany lots of stores will match the lower price, even up to 14 days after the purchase if you go back with your receipt and a flyer from the cheaper competition.
Funny story - I once witnessed an older gentlemen discussing a lower price with the information counter. The product in question was a yoghurt, and it was (gasp!) 1 cent cheaper elsewhere. They refunded him him 8 cents (or however many he had bought) but he stayed there and thought that they were going to adjust the price in the system and offer the yoghurt 1 cent cheaper *from then on*, which wasn't the case.
Hallo, I agree that service is better in the U.S. compared to GErmany. In Germany I always feel as though I have to be grateful that the store is of service to me. However, many stores now match the price if another store carries the exact same item. A good example are Obi and Praktiker (like Home Depot in the U.S.). /Andrea
Martina and Andrea: I didn't know that there are stores in Germany matching the price as well. Many they also have it in Austria by now?
