Ich bin auf das Blog von Imac gestossen, der vor ein paar Wochen Urlaub in Oesterreich gemacht hat. In einem seiner Posts darueber, zeigte er Fotos von Graebern. Friedhoefe in Oesterreich sehen sehr anders aus verglichen mit denen in den USA. Die meisten Oesterreicher besuchen regelmaessig das Grab ihrer Angehoerigen. Dabei bringen sie oft Blumendekorationen oder bepflanzen das Grab selbst. Es gibt auch eine kleine Laterne, wo man eine Kerze hineinstellen kann. Viele Graeber haben zusaetzlich ein Schuesselchen mit Weihwasser. Die Grabsteine sind meist sehr individuell gestaltet. Manche haben Fotos der Verstorbenen, andere nur ein kunstvoll geschmiedetes Kreuz - siehe imacs Fotos. Vor allem zu dieser Jahreszeit gedenkt man der Toten mit Allerheiligen und Allerseelen in den ersten zwei Novembertagen. Das Grab wird dann meist mit einem Kranz oder Gesteck besonders geschmueckt. Allerheiligen selbst ist ein Feiertag, an dem meist die ganze Familie zum Friedhof geht.
I found Imac's blog, who vacationed in Austria recently. In one of his posts he shows pictures of graves in Austria. Compared to the US they look quite differently. Most Austrians visit the graves of their relatives regularly. They usually take flower decorations with them or plant flowers on the grave. You can put a candle in a little lantern. Lots of graves also have a bowl with holy water in there. The tombestones are done very individually. Some have pictures of the deceased, others have an artfully forged cross - see imac's pics. Especiall around this time of the year people commemorate their ancestors on November 1st and 2nd - All Saints Day and All Soul's Day. There are special wreaths or bouquets just for this occasion put on graves. All Saints Day is a holiday, where most families go to the cementary.
Fuer Kinder ist das auch ein besonderer Tag. Sie bekommen von der Patentante/onkel einen Allerheiligenstriezel und andere Suessigkeiten. Zumindest war das noch zu meiner Kindheit so ueblich. Seit einigen Jahren zeigt sich auch hier der Einfluss der Medien durchs US-Fernsehen. Halloween wird oftmals auch jetzt in Oesterreich von Kindern gefeiert. Natuerlich macht der Handel dadurch auch kraeftige Gewinne. This day is also special for kids. They get a plaited bun and other sweets from their godparent. At least that's how it was done when I was a kid. For a few years now you can see the influence from the US TV-shows. Lots of kids celebrate Halloween now also in Austria. Of course, the businesses like that too.

I was so impressed with the graves in France. I got to see my Great Uncles grave, very nice. So many beautiful objects, you just can't do that in the U.S. It's rather sad.

Victoria: I noticed that some graves in the US are also very nicely decorated. However, most times the family is so spread out that it's not possible to visit it every few weeks. This is sad.
My experience is that there are cultural differences in the way graves are seen. I always thought that the grave was a final resting place, to be respected; for Germans I know, the grave is for the survivors. They'll visit weekly as long as they live in the area. When they've moved away and/or don't need to visit any more, they choose not to renew the lease and pay the next 25-year installment.
There is an old saying in Austria also in Bavarya "If you want to know more about a village or Town-visit the cemetary!"T.GITTA
Molly B: You brought up some very good points. I didn't think of mentioning the issue of leasing a grave in Germany and what happens when you don't pay anymore. Usually they lease the grave to someone else, then.
