Arztbesuch - Doctor's Visit

Arztbesuche laufen hier etwas anders ab. Es beginnt schon mal, dass man am Tag zuvor telefonisch eine Erinnerung bekommt, dass man einen Termin ausgemacht hat. Wenn man naemlich nicht erscheint oder zu kurzfristig absagt, dann muss man eine Gebuehr zahlen, die bis zu 50 Dollar ausmachen kann.
Im Wartezimmer traegt man sich zuerst mal in eine Liste mit Namen ein und man notiert auch dann schon, ob sich irgendwelche Daten wie Adresse oder Versicherung geaendert haben. Erst dann wird man von der Sprechhilfe aufgerufen und der Papierkram erledigt. Trotz Versicherung muss man eine Kostenbeteiligung gleich dann bezahlen. Die Hoehe haengt von der Versicherung ab. Bisher war ich noch bei keinem praktischen Arzt weil ich nie so richtig krank war. Ich geh aber regelmaessig zu den jaehrlichen Untersuchungen zum Zahnarzt, Augenarzt und Frauenarzt. Bisher waren alle Krankenschwestern und andere Mitarbeiter bei allen drei Aerzten ausserordentlich freundlich. Manche sind neugierig wegen meinem Akzent und fragen dann woher ich bin. Schon oft hat dann jemand geantwortet, dass sie eine Zeitlang in Deutschland waren, haben sich aber nicht getraut mit mir Deutsch zu sprechen. Was ich wirklich "angenehm" finde ist die Angewohnheit alles zu erklaeren. Zuerst erklaert einem schon oft die Krankenschwester was gemacht wird, was man zu erwarten hat und ob man irgendwelche Fragen hat. Und dann bei der eigentlichen Untersuchung beschreibt der Doktor auch nochmal alles: " Zuerst werde ich.. und das wird sich etwas... anfuehlen..." usw.. So ist man zumindest nicht im Ungewissen warum etwas weh tun koennte. In Oesterreich wird doch viel "heimlich" gemacht. Damit meine ich, dass man als Patient oft nicht weiss, was der Doktor eigentlich vorhat bis es dann schon wieder vorbei ist. Vielleicht werde ich jetzt einfach viel konservativer hier, aber ich finde es auch hier besser, dass man beim Frauenarzt mit einem Tuch bedeckt ist und nicht so ganz unbedeckt dortliegen muss.
Aber wie ueberall, manche Aerzte sind besser als andere. Falls einem was nicht passt, kann man ja sein Geld woanders hinbringen.

Doktor's visits are quite different here. It starts with getting a phone call the day before to remind you about your appointment. If you don't show up or cancel at short notice you might have to pay a fee, which can be up to $50. In the waiting area you first sign in and also mention if there are any data changes like your address or insurance. Then you get asked by the receptionist to finish all the paperwork and pay your copay - which depends on your insurance. Sofar I have never been at a family doctor because I am never really sick. However, I go to the annual exams to my dentist, eyedoctor, and OB/GYN. All the nurses and other people working there have been extremely friendly to me. Some are curious about my accent and ask where I am from. Some of them answer then that they have lived in Germany for a while, but are too shy to try to talk in German to me.
What I really like here when going to the doctor is that everything gets explained to you in detail. First the nurse explains what to expect and asks if I have any questions. Then at the actual exam, the doctor is describing what he is doing right then and there: "First, I am going to.. and that might feel a little....." etc. At least you know what's going on with you and you are not left wondering why something might be painful. In Austria lots of that is done without the patient knowing. Maybe I also get more conservative over here. I find it so much better that you are covered with a sheet when being at the OB/GYN and not just laying there completely uncovered.
But like anywhere, if you don't like a doktor for whatever reason, you can just go to another one.
