Desinformation / Disinformation

Im Garten meiner Eltern gab es dieses Jahr unzaehlige dieser Kartoffelkaefer. Mein Vater meinte dazu, die seien von den Amerikanern im Krieg abgeworfen worden, um die Ernten zu vernichten. Das war das erste Mal, dass ich so etwas gehoert haette und wollte es nicht ganz glauben. Ich fragte dann Sek, ob er etwas darueber weiss. Auch ihm war das unbekannt, obwohl er auf dem Gebiet sehr belesen ist. Jetzt habe ich endlich etwas Zeit gefunden, um mehr darueber herauszufinden: das Geruecht ist schon seit ueber 60 Jahren als Propagandamittel im Umlauf - zuerst von den Nazis und spaeter von den Russen benutzt. Die Kaefer selbst sind schon seit dem 19. Jahrhundert in Europa. Interessant, dass so eine Falschinformation soviele Jahre spaeter in der allgemeinen Bevoelkerung noch immer existiert.

In my parents' garden there were lots of those potato beetles this year. My dad said that those were dropped by the Americans in the war to destroy the crops. That's the first time that I ever heard any of that and I didn't really want to believe it. I asked Sek, if he knew something about it, but he had never heard of this before either. I finally found some time to read up on it: those rumors have been around as propganda for more than 60 years - first used by the Nazis, later by the Sovjets. The beetles have been in Europe since the 19th century though. I find it interesting, that disinformation like this still exists so many years later in the general public.
